Canton, China
Resided in:
Oakland, California
It is with heavy hearts and deep sorrow that we share the passing of our beloved mother, Carmen Wong Tom, on March 24, 2025, at the age of 89. After more than a year of health struggles, she left us peacefully, surrounded by the love and care of her family.
Born in Canton, China, on July 17, 1935, Carmen’s remarkable journey took her across the world. She married her husband, Francisco Chong, and followed him to Nicaragua, where they built a beautiful life together with their five children. When civil war disrupted their world, the two eldest children moved to the United States, and soon after, Carmen and the rest of the family moved to Costa Rica. Ten years later, Carmen followed her children to the U.S. and was reunited with them—where her love for family would continue to grow and shape their lives.
For the past 31 years, Fremont and Oakland, California, became her cherished home, though her true home was always where her family was. Carmen was the heart and soul of our family—our rock, our unwavering support, and our greatest teacher. Through every challenge, she remained resilient, always putting her children first, and showing us what it meant to live with grace, compassion, and strength.
Carmen was a woman of simple joys—she loved playing mahjong with family and friends, and her infectious laughter made every game special. Her sweet tooth was legendary—whether it was a slice of cake, a handful of cookies, or any dessert that brought joy to her face. Her love for sweets was a reminder of her warm, generous spirit, and it became a beloved tradition at every family gathering.
As a cook, Carmen’s meals were nothing short of extraordinary. Each dish was made with love. Her cooking brought the family together in ways words never could. We will miss her delicious meals, but even more, we will miss the love she poured into every plate.
Carmen is survived by her husband, Francisco Chong, her five children: Wyman (Cuc Schafer), Carmen, Ana (Kevin Cavanagh), Carolina (Julio Ortega), and Francisco (Sandra Li) and her grandchildren, Brittney, Sidney, Nicole, Allison, Natalia and Sofia. She was more than a mother and grandmother—she was the heart of our family, and her love, wisdom, and guidance will live on in us forever.
A memorial service will be held on April 7, 2025, at 10:30 AM at Berge Pappas Smith Chapel of Angels, 40842 Fremont Blvd., Fremont, CA, followed by a gathering at her eldest daughter’s home. We invite all who knew and loved her to join us as we celebrate her beautiful life, share stories, and honor the beautiful soul she was.
Rest in peace, Mom. Your love and legacy will continue to guide us. You will always be with us in our hearts. ❤️
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to AREAA Foundation.

My condolences for the great loss of your mother. Indeed, she was a kind and loving woman who worked hard along her husband to run a successful business in Nicaragua and to raise a wonderful family. She and her husband were beloved friends of my parents who will sure be meeting her in heaven. May the Lord grants her eternal rest, and to her children, the strength to face these difficult times.
Siento mucho Carmencita, por el fallecimiento de tu mamá, la recuerdo muy bien. Que descanse en paz y Dios le de consuelo a ti y tu familia.
In loving memory of your beloved mother.
May her warmth, love, and light continue to live on in you and all who were blessed to know her.
Thinking of you and holding your family close in my heart.
With love,
Angie & Jonathan Lee
